The City of Austin issued a citation against the Mosque for parking cars on unpaved grounds - a violation of the city code, towards the end of 1997, stating that oil from cars can seep into the water system via creeks if it is allowed to leak on the grassy areas. If we did not comply then they were going to enforce the regulations and fine the mosque in the order of a couple of thousand dollars for each day that we are in violation of their code. This would effectively have meant that Friday prayer would not be held at the mosque at all. By the grace of Allah (SWT) we received a reprieve from the City until we raised enough funds to expand the parking lot.We also received some cooperation from the neighboring church (Brentwood oaks Church of Christ) which allowed us to use their drive-way for parking for a few weeks.
Activities
The community pulled together to raise the $150,000 needed to expand the parking lot, retention pond, landscaping and lighting. Alhamdu lillah, we now have completed the expansion. The project was completed several thousand dollars under budget and is being enjoyed by the community. Some minor work still remains. There have been several fund raising events throughout this year and last (2001 and 2000, especially during Ramadans). We would like to thank the whole community for their support and efforts, and pray that Allah (SWT) rewards every one accordingly.
